CPD Blended Learning 

This course runs online over 12 weeks from 14th September  - 6th December 2025.  

Each week students will have access to Unit reading materials and  then participate in the online discussion forum, which is moderated by a clinical tutor.  Students can contribute in their own time and at their own pace on two non-consecutive days each week.  It is estimated that students will spend 4-6 hours per week on each Unit.

Course description

This course aims to develop the knowledge and skills of GP’s and GPN’s in the management of diabetes. This course will use current guidelines and research in diabetes care as a basis for theoretical and practical lessons. The twelve Units will be delivered as a distance learning course on the CANVAS platform. There will also be two workshop days covering practical skills in diabetes management.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to: confidently diagnose diabetes and care for those with Type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting glucose; Refer those with Type 1 Diabetes urgently and also those <30 years old or where the type of diabetes is unclear to secondary care; Know the importance of screening for gestational diabetes and provide post natal follow-up to thoses women ;Devise and implement appropriate management plans for patients with diabetes and related conditions including appropriate pharmacotherapy for glycaemic control and risk factor management; Detect potential and actual complications of diabetes ;Devise and implement appropriate plans for the reduction of risks of complications and the management of any complications that do occur; Facilitate patients in diabetes self-management and life-style modification; Quality assure their diabetes care by the construction of a practice diabetes register and the conduct of audit and evaluation.

Course content

This course consists of 12 distance learning units supported by two workshop days. Each unit will run for one week :

  3. Structured diabetes care
  4. Lifestyle modification
  5. Glucose Lowering Agents
  6. Insulin
  7. Acute emergencies
  8. Preventing cardiovascular disease
  9. Preventing diabetic foot disease
  10.  Preventing diabetic kidney  disease
  11. Preventing diabetic eye  disease
  12.  Diabetes and  pregnancy.
